Gramingo

Branding / UI/UX / UX Storytelling

The what

Gramingo is a web app that teaches students grammar in a chaotically amusing way, packed with lessons that actually make sense. You could call it “grammar Duolingo,” but its real charm is in the unhinged, witty UX copy that turns unmotivated users into mildly entertained learners.

The why

Studies show that Gen Z’s grammar skills are declining thanks to constant use of digital tools, yet there aren’t many products that make improving grammar even slightly appealing. Looking at the two biggest linguistic platforms, Duolingo and Grammarly, it’s clear that there’s so much potential in what they can do together. Combine Duolingo’s addictive gamified learning with Grammarly’s grammar engine, and you get the ultimate grammar-learning experience for Gen Z: Gramingo.

The how

To keep things fun and (mildly) chaotic, we expanded Duolingo’s storyline by introducing Granny Mingo, who’s the reason Duo is the way he is. Her sarcastic and judgy commentary speaks directly to Gen Z humour and is integrated throughout the site’s copy. The branding follows Duolingo’s guidelines so Granny Mingo’s grandson can randomly drop in without looking out of place. Gramingo mirrors Duolingo’s learning model, with lessons powered by Grammarly’s content.

The end

We submitted Gramingo to the RGD Student Awards in the Web Design category so Granny Mingo’s judgment could finally be judged, and guess what? We got an honourable mention (yay team!). Will that impress her? Absolutely not. She’s flawless and expects nothing less. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to finish our daily grammar lesson before we lose our streak.
